Fluency Intervention Tub Update

Hi friends! I hope everyone is having a great day! I'm loving the warmer temperatures and am so excited to take my sweet babies on a walk later. :)

Before I start tackling my Saturday to do list, I wanted to share how fluency tubs are working in my classroom this year.  I originally blogged about them {here}

Fluency tubs is a time of the day that my kiddos really enjoy.  It's full of games and fun stuff like reading in fun point of view voices and I LOVE being able to let them play games in language arts. Playing games is something I really miss about teaching math.  My OTES, our evaluation system in Ohio, goal was to have each of my kiddos grow about 30 words in the oral reading fluency by the end of the year, a gain of a little under a word a week. I am proud to say that 98% of my kids are well on their way to surpassing that this year.   Which I fully attribute that to fluency tubs and lots of independent reading during Read to Self.

My fluency tubs consist of five tubs/rotations.  My students rotate through each rotation/tub with their tables.  My students visit one rotation/tub a day and each rotation/tub lasts about ten minutes.

One rotation is working with me.  We work mainly on context clues during this time.  We mainly use these cloze passage to practice or various materials I purchase on TpT.  :) A few times a month, I also do ORF checks/data points with my kiddos.

You can check out this resource {here}.

Another rotation is fry phrase fluency games.  I several sets in my store {here} and even though my kids are bigger, they LOVE getting a new game every month.

I alway try to keep my eyes peeled for a fun bag/container at Target/Party City each month.  It just adds a little bit of extra fun. :)

This month, we are using my Pot of Gold Fluency Game

Another rotation is some type of poetry reading.  Last year I used these poems.  This year, my kiddos weren't exactly loving them.  So now I just search online for free seasonal poems, or use ones I've collected throughout the years.  For some reason, they like these a lot better. I still do add some of the partner poems for building fluency, just not every week.

Since the element of choice is very motivating for my kiddos, I love including several poems on a page and allowing them to pick.  My students take turns reading the poems with their shoulder partner and using the awesome Point of View Cards from my sweet friend Amanda

Another rotation is repeated readings of decodable passages using our weekly spelling patterns.  This is a new addition this year and something I just recently discovered came with our reading program.  This isn't their favorite but it's AWESOME fluency practice.

The last rotation is another type of game.  Right now, it's Fry Phrase Tic Tac Toe

This activity is from one of my newest resources.

Tic Tac Toe has been a recent addition to our rotations, and we have been loving it. :)  I have a fourth grade edition, fourth one hundred phrases, and a third grade edition, third one hundred phrases.  First and second grade fry phrase tic tac toe boards are coming soon!

I keep all my fluency tubs on a book shelf that stores all my word work centers.  We keep the lids off this year, for easy recognition.

I hope you've enjoyed learning about how our fluency tubs are working this year.  This ten minute time in my room is fun, purposeful, and makes such a difference. :)

Have a great weekend!

Fluency Intervention Tubs

I've mentioned a few times on the ole blog that my kiddos really needed some fluency help this year.  We've come a long way but we still have a long way to go.

Every day, we have a ten to fifteen minute intervention block.  Some students leave to go to other rooms for intensive interventions but most of my pumpkins stay with me.

We've tried centers, which they LOVED, however they didn't quite fit in the time frame that we had to follow, since some of my kids leave for Title and enrichment immediately after intervention and then other kids from another room come to my classroom for self selected reading.

We have been doing fluency tubs for a few weeks and we LOVE it. :)

What's inside these tubs? Let's check them out!

Tub One has Roll, Read, Repeat from Christina Bainbridge's Fourth Hundred Fry Phrase Fluency Intervention Pack.   My kids love this game!

Tub Two has a Partner Fluency Poem and Point of View Cards.   I got the partner poems from {this} Scholastic book.

I have the students read through it twice normally with their partner, then if they wish, they can pull a Point of View Card to use when reading the poem.  They LOVE changing their voices. :) Many thanks to my sweet friend Amanda for her creativity!

Tub Three is one of my monthly fry phrase games.  They LOVE playing these games and remind me oh so gently that we need a new one when a new month rolls around. :)

I got the container for this month's at Target. In the Dollar Spot! :)  It is the perfect size and price.
Check out "Bee" Mine on TpT {here}.

On a side note, I bought a new printer this weekend.  If you print a lot of stuff at home, I can't recommend this printer enough.  The ink lasts a long time, it prints super fast, and the pages come out DRY! :)

Tub Four has some fry phrases, using the fourth one hundred words but I plan on using the fifth one hundred soon, fun pointers, and point of view cards.

Finally, one group always meets with me.  In addition to improving our fluency scores, we also need to work on our DAZE scores as well.  The group that works with me using does some type of context clue work.  We've mainly done activities from this book.

Quick Cloze Passages for Boosting Comprehension 4-6: 40 Leveled Cloze Passages That Give Students Practice in Using Context Clues to Build Vocabulary and Comprehension

Sometimes, we'll use resources off the Dibels website as well to become more familiar with the format of the actual test they take

What I love about these rotations is how easy they are to manage, I'm only changing out games and activities every few weeks. Plus they are engaging and give my kiddos some much need practice in fluency and instruction with fluency and vocabulary! Win, win!

I hope you've enjoyed seeing how fluency intervention works in my room! :) This ten minute time is so powerful and has become one of our favorite times of the day! :)

Off to grade some formative assessments to plan my math groups tomorrow, have a great evening!

Snow Day, Sunshine: Fry Phrase Fun

Hey friends! I hate to post in run but I have a meeting to get to in a few minutes!

I just wanted to let y'all know that my January Fry Phrase Game is up at my Teachers Pay Teachers store!

I couldn't quite figure out a theme for this game until the other day, so I apologize for the delay! To play, just print off your desired level of fry phrases, I use one for the 4th 100 words, but the game includes phrases for the 3rd, 4th and 5th 100 words.  Then add in the Snow Day and Sunshine cards.  Snow day cards earn extra turns and the possbility of more cards! Sunshine, which melts snow, means the loss of a turn cards.  Whoever has the most cards at the end of the game...wins!

I use my fry phrase games with my struggling readers during ELA intervention time and with parent helpers mostly.  My kids LOVE these games and it has made a big difference in their fluency scores.  I *try* to keep them in a seasonal container but sometimes a beach bucket works just fine. :)

Check out the picture or {here} to check it out on TpT! :)

Have a great evening!
